Recording external sounds

My Travel Mate Laptop shows that it has a feature which can enable me to record sounds.
How do I use this feature to record (external) sounds such as via the microphone

if your soundcard is properly installed, just attach a microphone to the jack input and run the soundrecorder from start->programs->accesories->entertainment
also, you could use third party software for recording and encoding in MP3 format if you wish
