Microphone not working. dpvsetup.exe error

I have Win XP Pro.
My microphone doesn't work. No sound is recorded.
When I run the Hardware Test on Control Panel/Sounds and Audio Devices/Voice

after running thru it, it comes up with an error saying:

An error occured during DirectPlay Voice Setup.
The error code is 0x80004005

and when I press OK to that, another one says:

Windows cannot execute Dpvsetup.exe, use Add/Remove Programs control panel to install.

After searching the MS Knowledge Database, it says to slide the Hardware Accelaration slider to the right and retry. I did that and still got nowhere.

I even installed Directx 9.0b to see if that would help, alas no joy.

Last measure was to reinstall XP Pro over the old one (maybe it would reinstall some critical file), This didn't work either.

I'm out of options. What do i do to repair this dpvsetup.exe file and/or get my microphone working?

Appreciate any help
Thanks

Have you try to reinstall the sound card driver? if not, try to uninstall, reboot and reinstall the sound driver again.
It may sound daft but hear me out, where did you install DX9 from ? if you did not use windows update try it and install DX9b, apparently this should work.

Solved it. Just copied dpvsetup from my laptop and put it on the desktop. It replaced the file.

Thanks for the help anyway
agree PAQ'd and refund
