HDD overheated or dust particles killed it.

I have this IBM HDD which was put into a removable drawer. I used it one night and the next morning when I switched my PC on again it said "Primary master not found". I sent the HDD to my friend to check and he said the drawer with the HDD in it has lots of dust in it. The dust jammed the drawer fan and the HDD died either of heat stroke :) or dust particles. He said to let it cool down and try to quickly transfer the data I need to my Maxtor HDD.
I did what he said. But halfway through(HDD heated up very fast cuz its dying), there was a transfer error and all the mp3 files disappeared from my IBM HDD! Did the OS delete all those hundreds of file? How can i try to get all, or even some of them back?
