dynamic information in a template?

I'd like to put some dynamic information from my database into the template I use for many pages in my site.  The plus sign to add the recordset, however, is grayed out and so I can't seem to use any of the fields in the template.

Is it possible to do this?  I tried making this happen in an editable region, but it didn't seem to matter.  Is this something that just can't happen?
