5.5 Server crashed, no backup, exmerge problems

One of my clients Windows 2000 / Exchange 5.5 servers had a hard drive failure.  I managed to get the \exchsrvr directories copied to another server.

I have built a new server (Windows 2000) with the same name as the original.  I installed Exchange 5.5 using the same OU and SITE names.  I upgraded Exchange to SP4, but I'm not sure that the previous Exchange server was running this service pack.  I ran eseutil in recovery mode.  eseutil worked fine against the private store, but I kept getting a JET error on the public store.  Since all I need is one mailbox off of this server, I gave up on the public store and used the default public store instead.  (Is this a problem???)

With this setup, I can start all Exchange services and run Exchange Admin.  I can see all the mailboxes in the private store.  All the Exchange services logon with domain\administrator, which is the service account admin on the site, domain, container, server, etc. in Exchange Admin.

While logged on as domain\administrator (Exchange Service Account Admin), I ran exmerge (for exchange 5.5).  It did not work.  exmerge log is below:

****************************************************************

I have tried logging on as Chris Smith (name has been changed to protect the innocent) locally and setting up Outlook, but I get an error telling me the name is not recognized when I try to configure Outlook.  (I'll post the exact error shortly).

When trying to setup Outlook for this user, while logged on to the Exchange 5.5 server as the user, I get the following:
"The name could not be matched to a name in the address list."

Also, a little more information.  The domain is a Windows NT 4.0 domain.  This server is Windows 2000 running Exchange 5.5.
>I gave up on the public store and used the default public store instead.  (Is this a problem)?

No, not a problem.

If Outlook cannot find the mailbox I would rebuild the directory:
In exchange admin select the server, file-properties, Advanced tab then consistency adjuster, the top checkbox ...create new directories for mailboxes... should do it, and select the all inconsistencies radiobutton under the filter option.

Also check the mailbox is seen under the server, private-info-store, mailbox-resources.

Thanks for the tip.  Just tried it.  It ran with no errors.  Exmerge still gets the same errors as above.

The mailbox is listed in mailbox resources.

I'm going to try loading Outlook 2003 on the server.  I read somewhere that Outlook 2000 could cause problems with exmerge.  I can't remember where I read it, but it's worth a shot.
