How about someting like the following:

Note that sometimes you can get a nice simple effect without using any linking graphics between the small square and the larger zoomed square, the color of the squares will make more of a difference.

You might also want to try having the zoomed image as the main bacgroung image, and have a smaller picture of the entire image in a small window on the main zoomed bacrground... similar to the inverse of what is shown in the example - hope I've explained that well!
