_level / _root

//choosing the correct subdirectory in a photoalbum with an index (nieuwesector) to view different pages in that part of the album

function sector(nieuwesector, nieuweinfo) {
    _root[oudesector]._visible = false;           // old index subdir.
    _root[nieuwesector]._visible = true;         // new index subdir.
    nieuwefoto = "po"+nieuwesector+"1.jpg"; // first photo in the new subdir.
    fotoclip2.loadMovie("HTTP://www.fivez.be/foto/"+nieuwefoto);
    _root.info = nieuweinfo;                      // comments on the new picture
    _root.informatie._visible = true;          // clip showing the info -> visible
    oudesector = nieuwesector;               // old index = new index
}
The indexes are movieclips created in the second (key)frame.
This code works if I am in the second frame of my movie.
When I try to execute this function from the first frame, the first two lines do not work. Changing _root to _level1 does not help: it only stops the function from working in the second frame as well.

If you could point me to what I am doing wrong, I would highly appreciate it.

i would really like to see the .fla, i'm sure there is something really simple that needs change, or addition.  is there a stop on frame one?  i can only imagine what this looks like, let me know if you don't have web space to post it, you can e-mail it to me, and i'll post it on the web for eevryone that's interested.

do you want the new index to be visible on the first keyframe?  this is what i'm having a hard time with.  i'm guessing that you have your content on the second keyframe, and you want to call portions of it into the first?  it might help to use the gotoandplay action to call your mc.  for example, place the index_mc on the first keyframe where you'd like it to display, then on its first keyframe (inside of the clip), give the graphic an alpha of 0 and a stop command.  then on its second give it an alpha of 100 and a stop command.  after that, you'd be able to call it using the _root."mc name".gotoandplay(2) to make it visible, but i'm just not sure what you're trying to achieve.

This is a link that helped me further;

http://www.umbc.edu/interactive/flash/tutorials/showpage.php?p=depths

Thank you for all the advice: I've copied the movieclips to the first frame and made them invisible.

Now everything works fine: interpreter in the first frame does not know yet what happens in the second frame so it could not work untill I copied the mc to the first frame.
