I need to develop a service type application that will pre-process incoming email.
The application must be independent from email client, ie it should declared as the application's Incoming mail POP3 server.
I have no idea where to start, so please give as much help as you can.

Check the "user created" page for something like this, or set up a "pop3 proxy".

Proxies are straightforward but non-trivial.  ICS sets things up so it is relatively easy to create a proxy.

Should I be using Indy rather than ICS? ICS looks like rather old stuff.

ICS most recent beta is relatively recent.  It is quite stable because it has been around for a while and has been actively worked on intensively by a large number of programmers, with good oversight and control by Francois.

ICS has been extended to Kylix (linux) and is in the process of being extended to .NET.  Francois is also working on adding SSL to the suite.

ICS supports and is regularly tested on D2 through D7, plus several versions of BCB.
