Unable to install Norton's Antivirus Corp Edition 8.0

I am receiving the following error message "Error 1920. Service Norton AntiVirus Server (Norton AntiVirus Server) failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services."

I have gone to Symantec's site and found in their knowledge base instructions on how to possibly correct the problem, however those procedures didn't work.

This system has not had any antivirus program on it, and the person who owns it has contracted a wonderful virus by the name of w32.Jeefo. The user performed some troubleshooting of his own, then brought the system to me. (thought that I would give you some history)

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Not sure what you meant by contracted that virus.

You may want to check this to remove the virus
http://www.sophos.com/virusinfo/analyses/w32jeefoa.html

May be the virus is preventing installation of the anti-virus program

I checked out the links that you provided, with unfortunate results. The online virus program found 7 infected documents. I deleted those and tried reinstalling the antivirus program, again without success.

This is a pure pain.

Any other suggestions?

Hmmm ..  Not sure what it could be..because the issue that you had ( atleast the error message) is in the symantec site and they have a solution for that ..

Have you tried emailing them

Are you sure that you are an administrator on the machine you are trying to install it. Also if you downloaded the software off the net there could be a problem with that.  Sometimes you don't download the exact copy of the net and a problem occurs. If that is the case try to download it again.

Go to http://us.mcafee.com/virusInfo/default.asp?id=stinger, download and run stinger to disinfect the machine, then as administrator uninstall Norton Antivirus, then install Norton Antivirus.

For a better answer, which operating system and service pack level?
