Automatic downloading (like Norton with virus definitions)

I work for a company that does major league baseball scouting and we are developing a new part to our web site that will have the ability to transfer files back and forth to our clients.  We are wondering if there is a way to automatically download like Norton (new virus definitions) and Microsoft (OS updates)?  We would want our clients to receive the most updated player database whenever they connect to the internet.

I don't know if that is descriptive enough or not...Thanks!

Hi,

The easiest method would be connect a link to a zipped file that once downloaded unzips itself (seach for WinZip, etal at google for licensing, etc).  While this would not be totally 'automatic', it is probably the best you can do from your end.

If you have access to the client's machine, you can create an application (in C/C++, etc) that automatically checks your server for downloads and then initiates the download -- much as M$'s update windows

That link links to the SAME thing Windows uses to download their updates in the background.  The article is VS.Net, and I don't know what you are using, but this would be the best way to go because it is already implemented for you.
