Probably, try to manage the user's queries through scripting. Let's say there is a button named "category search" on your browse layout which first switched to a layout that shows the scrolling list and everything else you need. Just add the steps "switch to find mode" and "perform find"... well you know this stuff.

On your browse layout, add another button named "other search methods" or whatever you like, and make this switch to a layout without the category list before it switches to find mode.

Both scripts, I assume, return the results before they switch back to the original layout.
Let me know if you need more info.

Good luck,
Rogier.
