You can use Network Bridging for the setup you desire.

I assume you have two network cards in your "main computer".  Once for wireless and a wired NIC not being used?  If so, plug your laptop into the wired NIC using a cross over cable.  Then in your network connections on the XP computer, bridge your wireless and wired connections by right clicking them.  ICS and XP firewall must be disabled.  Leave your TCP/IP settings on the wired NIC and your notebook NIC to use DHCP and they should automatically be assigned an IP address from your router/DHCP server.
