An error 54 indicates a corrupt variable data portion in the record.  The best thing to do in this case would be to Clone the data file, Recover the data, then Load the new file, all using the BUTIL utility.  To do this (assumes DB is on a Windows server):

Go to a command prompt

CD to the directory and drive where the data file is located

Type 'BUTIL -clone address2.dbp address.dbp'
This creates a file called 'address2.dbp' with the same layout as address.dbp

Type 'BUTIL -recover address.dbp address.txt'
This recovers all of the data possible from the address.dbp file into the address.txt file.  For the record(s) with the error 54, as much of the data as can be recovered is copied into the .txt file

Type 'BUTIL -load address.txt address2.dbp'
This loads the data into the new table

Finally, rename the files:

REN address.dbp address.old
REN address2.dbp address.dbp

Your data file now should be in good shape.

What version of Btrieve are you working with?  If 6.15 0r earlier, what is in the BTI.INI file, and what command line are you using to start the engine?  You probably have some buffer entry set too small.
