I'm developing a web enabled application in JAVA and need a server side reporting tool
to produce reports that retain formatiting, i.e. like reports generated out of Access.

Can someone suggest anything?

When it comes to reporting Crystal Reports is considered the industry standard.  I've never worked with it, but from what I understand there's a free version available:

Oops.  The free version's only good for 30 days.  After that you've 3 choices:

Professional    $610
Developer       $705
Advanced       $2035
