what are you talking about: mail or ftp?
Depends on the kind of certificates you use - Netscape or Lotus most likely need native client software, GnuPG (aka gpg or Gnu Privacy Guarg) or pgp (aka PGP Command Line) or even OpenSSL command line tool (openssl) helps with rest.
guarg -> guard

ahoffman,

the guys that are renting me the EDI box , say that if I want to connect to them using ftp I need a ftp program that can handle digital ceritificates (like WS_ftp pro for windows) on the sco unix 5.0.5.
There are no "digital certificates" in FTP. Maybe they use XAUT authentification instead of usual PASS. (or this is not FTP).
Could they explain which RFC describes what THEY CALL FTP?
System requirements and security
The FTP gateway for the Internet requires the trading partner/customer to install a secure FTP client (see list below for software options) that supports Secure Sockets Layer (SSL). At a basic level, SSL provides confidentiality, integrity, and server authentication facilities. For authentication, SSL supports asymmetric cryptography, which requires the use of public key certificates.
To use the TCP/IP FTP gateway, you need the following:
•      An X.509 certificate available at no charge from the IBM certificate issue/reissue Web site at https://pki.services.ibm.com.  For security purposes, the certificates expire every 2 years.
•      Access to the Internet
•      An Information Exchange account ID and user ID
•      A secure FTP client supporting SSL or Secure Sockets Layer, compliant with Internet draft for FTP security extensions draft-murray-auth-ftp-ssl-07.txt and a certificate issued specifically for use with the Information Exchange/FTP interface.  This standard is available from the Internet Drafts Shadow Directories on ds.internic.net (US East Coast), nic.nordu.net (Europe), ftp.isi.edu (US West Coast), or munnari.oz.au (Pacific Rim).  For client compatibility, see details on the certificate issue/reissue Web site.
