Convert avi to jpeg?

can gd or imagemagick convert a frame of a movie file into an image (jpeg)? If not what is the best way to do it? I am doin this because i allow my clients to upload their images and my code converts them into jpeg thumbnails. I allow them to upload their avi files as well but i do not know if PHP can convert avi into image for thumbnail creation.

Thanks

ImageMagick supported formats: http://studio.imagemagick.org/www/formats.html

According to imagemagick.org, IM has limited support for exactly what you are trying to do. The problem seems to be "the AVI coder will currently only handle AVI with embedded Windows bitmaps."

Here's another quote from October 2003:

"ImageMagick supports only AVI's with an embedded Windows bitmap.  If your images have any other codec you will need to first convert the images with some other program to a format that ImageMagick can understand.  Alternatively you could add support to the AVI coders for your images, just edit coders/avi.c and send us the patches so others can benfit from your work."

I don't know if that's much help, but it's all I got! ;)
