HELP!! Is there any event equivalent to IE document's "onreadystatechange" event in Netscape?

I want to trap the event when a request for downloading something is submitted and the server outputs the 'save as/open' dialog box. I have tried using document's 'onreadystatechange' event but it works in IE only. Is there any event or any way that i can use at the time i get the 'save as/open' dialog box?
This whole thing i am doing to show some kind of visual indication to the user that her request for downloading is getting processed in the background. The user selects some files that needs to be zipped at the background before downloading. Till the time the zipping is completed the user doesn't have a clue as to if her request is been processed other than to look at the status bar. I would appreciate if anybody knows of any other alternative for doin this.

Use the onClick event to notify the user about the neccessary time for download.
