lap top does not turn on

I can't turn on my lap top. At first it seemed that it got turned on(it was making noise) but the screen was still black. Then it  would not turn on at all. I keep pressing the power button but nothing happens. It does not even make a sound.  I have a Toshiba lap top A15-S127. Anyone had that happen before? anyone has any ideas?

When you turn on the laptop and still hear sounds (fan? hard drive spin?), then the problem could be the LCD.  To verify, try swapping the hard drive out into another similar laptop (assuming you have a spare lying around) to see whether you get video back. Or try reseating the connections between the motherboard and LCD.

Try turning it on without the battery.  Remove the battery.  Plug in the AC adapter. Does it turn on now?  If so, try replacing the battery with a known good battery.

Do tell us whether you hear the hard drive spinning.

unfortunatelly I don't have any spare lap tops lying around. And it is plugged in with AC adapter. At first I did hear sounds when I turn it on but not anymore.

blumbra you were very close. It had to do with power. Turns out it's not recomended to have more than one computer plugged in the same outlet. I got a UPS, now it works
I was given a  Gateway laptop and have the same problem of a dark screen.Have insured that the connex to the MB is clean and tight. Also have plugged in an outside monitor. All to no avail. Are there any further troubleshooting measures to determine what the prob is?

TD,

If you have plugged in your laptop to an external monitor and still get no video, then the problem is most likely on the motherboard. Hopefully your laptop is still under warranty. (I'm assuming you're like YZLat who doesn't have a spare similar laptop to swap the HD into to see whether there is video from a different laptop, or a spare similar laptop to swap the motherboard). Good luck!
