"please go to the control panel to install and configure system components"

It's a fresh install of w2000pro with sp4.
Message shows up at the end of bootup and doesn't affect the operation of the machine.

There are no indications in device manager that anything is wrong.

I've run w2000pro before on this machine without that message. About the only difference I can think of between this and the old install is that I have partitioned the hard drive.

....I could try removing the hardware pieces bit by bit, to see if error message goes away, but it might not even be a hardware problem.

...would prefer not to do a reinstall.  Might fix it, but I'd rather find out what the problem is.
Your page file is too small ?  possibly pointed to the wrong drive ?
My computer properties
Advanced Tab
Performance Options
Virtual Memory change
set  minimum to 1 and 1/2 times over your total RAM

now make sure the page sizes are showing up in the top if the menu under [win2000 OS partition]

now click Apply
go to Envirinment Variables
select TEMP at the top > EDIT
and make sure it points to a place that has enough room like  --  %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temp

OK...
under advanced tab performance options ....shows 192mb"total paging file size for all drives"
....so I assume that's ok.   minimum would be 1.5 x 128 =192.
"total paging file size for all drives 192MB"

If I click on Performance options/Change I get ...

                                    Paging File Size
C:                                192-384
D:

......
"now make sure the page sizes are showing up in the top of the menu under win2000 os partition..
....??????????????????????????????I don't see that anywhere.??????????????

...when I go to Environment variables I get ...

TEMP     C:\docs&settngs\dave\localsettngs\temp
TMP       C:...........same thing...........................
....

I'm clueless on this ... from what I understand of what you told me, c seems ok.  >>>is the d drive configured correctly, since it's a partition of a single physical hard drive??

(will increase points for solution if this starts to get tricky)
Everything looks good with your info...

your page file is 192-384

It shows up in C:[windows 2000]
Paging File Size
C:                                192-384
D:

and your TEMP Environment is correct
TEMP     C:\docs&settngs\dave\localsettngs\temp
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Two things to try,
try increasing the page file min and max to double just for test!
Next,
if your D: drive is a more suitable place for your page files then move it there by doing the same mothods but this time delete the values of 192 and 384 in C:
and add these values to D:
like this:
                      Paging File Size
C:
D:                               192-384

and change your TEMP Environment
to
TEMP     D:\temp

This is all reversible , I'll keep researching your problem.

thanks

Problem solved .... from the posts I've seen, the message seems to indicate an install glitch...
for  example......https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/20548287/Windows-XP-My-Computer.html?query=Please+go+to+the+control+panel+to+install+and+configure+system+components&searchType=all ....
....http://www.google.com/ie?q=%22Please+go+to+the+control+panel+to+install+and+configure+system+components%22&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&start=10&sa=N

... in my case, it was not an inf problem.  I removed and restored netscape, winzip, etc and rebooted after each uninstall.  When I did that with the geoforce video driver, the problem went away.
(... a common thread in the problem posted by other users was that the DOWNLOADED program did not install properly.

.... and to repeat from my original question ..there are/were  no indications in device manager that anything is wrong.
thanks anyway.
Glad it's all working
