Trying to make the ATI Rage 128 PRO (AIW) graphics adapter work on Windows 2000.
I have tried both the recommended driver and the alternative driver from www.ati.com, and both give the error message "This display driver is not compatible with the display adapter(s) installed in your system."

The latest version of DirectX has been freshly downloaded and installed on the system. What else needs to be done?

Please!!

This is from the ATI site at:

"This display driver is not compatible" or "Video Driver Not Found" error installing ATI Enhanced display drivers
In some instances, when attempting to install ATI Enhanced display drivers, the automatic installation process may stop with the following error message:

"This display driver is not compatible with the display adapter(s) installed in your system"
or "Severe! INF Error. Video Driver Not Found"

This error occurs when the automatic installer fails to recognize the ATI graphics adapter installed in the system. This could happen for a number of reasons. Each of the following are explained in greater detail below:
"POWERED BY ATI" products require special drivers
ATI manufactured product came pre-installed in a computer from a large system manufacturer
"BUILT BY ATI" product is a later hardware revision than intended for the driver
Configuration issue or conflict "masking" the graphics adapter

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"POWERED BY ATI" products require special drivers
POWERED BY ATI products are manufactured using ATI components but by another manufacturer. These products are distinguished by the POWERED BY ATI logo on the product packaging.

ATI software installers on ATI Installation CDs, as well as those posted on the ATI website for "BUILT BY ATI" products are NOT meant to work with POWERED BY ATI products.

For information on how to locate a driver for a POWERED BY ATI product, visit the "POWERED BY ATI" section of our website.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ATI manufactured product came pre-installed in a computer from a large system manufacturer
ATI often manufactures cards for larger system manufacturers (Dell, Hewlet Packard, Compaq, etc.) which they then pre-install in their systems.

In some instances the system manufacturer will specifically request that the standard drivers for "BUILT BY ATI" products not install against their particular hardware version. This is often requested so that the system manufacturer is able to independently qualify and control the driver releases offered for their hardware configurations.

In these cases, driver updates should be available from the manufacturer which will take complete advantage of system features.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"BUILT BY ATI" product is a later hardware revision than intended for the driver
ATI often introduces newer product revisions which will require newer drivers than older versions of the product. (e.g. A given product may originally only be available in AGP format.  If a PCI version of the product is introduced at a later date it would usually require newer drivers to account for the new bus type.)

If you attempt to install driver intended for an older revision of hardware they will not recognize the newer hardware.

This may be the case If you have already installed ATI Enhanced display drivers which are newer than those you are trying to install.

In this event it is advisable to use only the software that came on CD with your product until a later driver update is available.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Configuration issue or conflict "masking" the graphics card
In some instances a configuration issue or conflict may "mask" the presence of the graphics card from the installation software.

Common sources can include interference from other software, conflicts with another device in the system, etc.

Prior to attempting to install drivers for your ATI product, try exiting all other applications running on the system. You may additionally consider disabling/removing any devices which share IRQ, DMA, or IO Port resources with your graphics card. Then try installing your ATI display driver again.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you have a BUILT BY ATI product and the above information did not help to resolve this issue, then please contact ATI Customer Care and provide the following information:
102 part number of card
( How can I determine the (102) part number for my card? )
180 part number on ATI Installation CD
( How can I determine the (180) part number for my ATI CD? )
version of display driver you are trying to install (if different from the software on CD)
which OS you are using

the last comment here was by CleanupPing.....so I'm very unclear if this answer was graded by the questioner or a mod....

If it was graded by anseris, the same applys....please read the EE grading guidelines and then explain your "C".....you have not provided any feedback as to the resolution to the problem, let alone the opportunity to provide additional help if you needed it.
