Is FileVault really necessary in my case?

I know that turning FileVault on is a good idea if I were to have a laptop and go out into the public. Just in case someone steals my computer and they won't have access to my home folder. But what if I'm using my computer at home? And the only people in the house is just wife and I. Should I still turn FileVault on or would this not be necessary in my case?

So what your saying is FileVault will only be truly necessary if I have a laptop that I take out into the public? Yes? To be honest..I have some sesitive data that I sure as hell DO NOT want a hacker (if he/she were to get into my computer) to see or take. Should I still turn on FileVault?

Yes. And you're on a Mac, behind a firewall. Quit worrying about hackers. Don't bother with filevault.
