How to get rid of "windows installer" trying to install MSRedist

This is a description of what I recently did to my computer.

I had windows 2000 SP4 installed on a hard disk. This disk was failing so i bought a new one, used Norton Ghost to clone the old hard disk onto the new hard disk. After finally being able to boot from the new hard disk, windows was unable to log on because it kept saying that a page file did not exist and told me to change the settings by right clicking my computer. That was just plain stupid because after displaying the error, windows just returns me back to the login screen. I tried this in safe mode with the same result. So i decided to use my win 2000 SP2 cd to "fix" my windows.

The problem is:

After it "fixed" it, every time Windows loads or I open explorer the stupid "windows installer" dialog pops up asking for the "MSRedist" disk. I've checked my win 2k CD and such a file does not exist. Does anyone know what this is or how to fix it?

on your next post supply the information that is diplayed after each of the entries please:

Start > Run > regedit

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

I want to manually check for viruses

Most likely you have a worm that is try to send distribution emails from your system.
Because you cloned you old drive , you took the worm off the old one and put it on the new one.
You could do a repair a million times and you could reinstall your service packs also and it will do NOTHING !

Absolutely Nothing.
we need to find the hidden worm and remove it!

I have the same problem. I have tried to repair files by using install disk to no avail. Downloaded the  Windows Installer Cleanup Utility. Won't let me intall it. Says another program is in process of installing...nothing I've done. Have ran all virus protection and says I'm clean. Next?  Thanks, Michael

If you had norton anti virus on the system before the reinstall, you have to remove after. This will fix the problem. I was running norton 2004 and after I uninstalled it, the msredist error disappeared.

I get the windows installer MSRedist  message pop up on my computer...I can't seem to uninstall Norton Anti Virus or Norton System Works. I get a message telling me Windows can't uninstall since it is still trying to instrall a program....Please help.....
