Taskbar problem

I have just installed WinXP Home Edition, intending to install bit by bit my programs from a different HD which has Win98SE on it. So far, I have only installed system files and update patches, plus a few necessary items such as email etc.

When I try to set up the taskbar properties to hide/show certain icons, I get as far as the drop down menu, but no further....every icon is stuck on "Hide when inactive" and I can't change any of them to anything else. Even SP1 didn't fix this problem.

Does anyone know what causes this and how to resolve it?

Thanks

Sorry, not sure what you mean "clearing the items".

It means, just what the title says "Remove Past Items From Notification Area" from the customize list.

Sorry, but I don't have any title like that. In the Customize list, I have "Restore defaults" and nothing else.

the title available in that website, not in the dialog box.

Goto that website and download the Tip 53 registry fix. Run it.

Oh I am sorry, I didn't see the link in your original answer! I've gone to the site now and downloaded the script; it has removed all past items, but the remaining ones still can't be altered....they are stuck on either Hide When Inactive or Always Show.

Try this utility:
Taskbar, Notification Area repair Tool: "Taskbar Repair Tool Plus!"
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/taskbarplus!.htm

Toolbars > "Greyed out or missing" and press the Repair button at the right side.

Also, click start | run | and type "regsvr32 /i browseui.dll"

Restart

Tried both, and didn't even dent it. I'm starting to think I'm stuck with it, short of a total reinstall, which I'm not going to do.

Sorry, it did not work. Pls go ahead with reinstall.
