What are the steps you're taking to join it to the domain?  Are you trying to simply add it as a member server to the domain or are you using DCPROMO to make it a Domain Controller?

right click on my computer, properties, computer name, change, member of domaihn (domainname), i enter administrator, password and it gives me the error

Is there another computer on the domain with the same computername as the one you're attempting to add?

More simple solution: Remove the computer from the Active Directory under domain controllers.

I did a reinstall of an existing server and got this error. I checked the AD and the computer was still present. Removed the old record and I could join the domain again.
