I cannot join a server with 2003 standard to my 2003 domain.  Error states "The following error occured attempting to join the domain "mydomainname".  The specified user already exists

What are the steps you're taking to join it to the domain?  Are you trying to simply add it as a member server to the domain or are you using DCPROMO to make it a Domain Controller?

right click on my computer, properties, computer name, change, member of domaihn (domainname), i enter administrator, password and it gives me the error

Is there another computer on the domain with the same computername as the one you're attempting to add?

no there isn't, that is what i cannot figure out.  i even tried changing the computer name

More simple solution: Remove the computer from the Active Directory under domain controllers.

I did a reinstall of an existing server and got this error. I checked the AD and the computer was still present. Removed the old record and I could join the domain again.
