sounds and multimedia problems

I'm running Windows 2000 and have alittle issue when controling sound. First the little speaker icon that might appear in the taskbar doesn't appear and when i go to the control panel>Sounds and Multimedia. The "show sound icon in taskbar" is unchecked and disabled so i can not change it. I would like to not have this greyed out and be able to change on the fly. What are my solutions and options?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

You should install a driver for your soundcard. If you don't know what kind of soundcard you have, try AIDA32 => http://www.aida32.hu to identify it for you. Afterwards download the driver from the manufactors site or try http://www.driverguide.com (loginname: drivers password: all)

Also, check the device manager if there are any exclamation marks ( ! ) there. If there are, where do they stand for.
