cant get to boot correctly

I just purchased a new system:
Athlon 2600 and new MB
80 gig hard drive

When I turn the computer on, sometimes it will give a system halted error, sometimes it will just turn on but nothing will show on the monitor, and if it sits on for about 5 minutes it shuts off.  any ideas? do i have a bad motherboard and/or processor? or possibly the jumpers are incorrect?
Thanks guys

I would guess that since everything is new it is bad RAM do you have any to change out to test it.
You are going to have to go through and test everything.  Are you getting any beep errors.  If so what are they.  If not did you get your speaker hooked up?  You might not get a beep error though.   Just want to make sure that you have it plugged in.  If there was a beep we would no what the problem was.

Here is the order you need to check in.  first remove HD and any other drives.
Check RAM - make sure that it will work with your MB.  What is your MB?
P/S
video card
CPU
motherboard.

give use some more info about your system too.  However, I would guess that if the RAM is new than there is a good possibility that it could be that.  It could be many other things though.
