do you have GD libraries compiled in your PHP build?

it'll tell you in phpinfo();

if u have GD lib complied then either one of this might be the problem.

GD module you could load by uncommenting
; extension = gd.so in your php.ini by removing the semicolon from in front of the line.

or by having in your PHP code a call to the dynamic loader like
<? dl("gd.so"); ?>
