Archos AV320 is anyone else disappointed?

When I first purchased this toy, I was thinking OMG this thing is great. Than I realized that I have to reencode almost every movie that I have. Though it looks great and does what it says, the encoding process can be very time consuming. Since DivX (and yes I purchased the full version like a chump) crashes my computer everytime I try and encode with it. Trust me my computer is old but not that bad: AMD Athlon 2100, 1GB PC2100 DDR, etc... Oh, Xvid works but the quality doesn't seem the same.

Does anyone know if they will ever release an update so that the device is able to play mpegs? They are releasing one so that it is able to play WMA. If they do (mpeg playback) this is the only way I will be satisfied.

Hi DrJekyll452,

Looking at this review http://www.mp3newswire.net/stories/2003/archosav320review.html this device can only play AVI :-(
But looking at the firmware update wich should be available soon it will be able to play WMA then. http://www.archos.com/press/press_releases/archos_new_firmware_av300.051203.en.pdf

Check this one, http://www.archos.com/download/firmware.html I don't know if this is the firmware I that document was talking about, if it isn't you should keep an eye on this page.

Greetings,

LucF

btw. Try a converter like Virtual Dub to re-encode your videos to see if that'll speed up things.

Directly from Archos:

"Ys, with the new firmware will add support for WMA and WAV as well. Also with the video editing. We didn't have any update on the MPG file yet but so far we didn't heard of any plan on that."

Yeah, I guess not. sniff...sniff.

I do use Virtual Dub. But there is something about Mpegs my computer does not like. It freezes everytime I try and encode an mpeg1. If I re-encode divx it is fine.

p.s. one final tip, try other programs to re-encode your MPEG files, see wich one doesn't give you problems.
