Searching for a counter

Looking for a new counter

I have used a counter, named HitBoxCentral, during this year. It is the best free counter I have ever used, but from January 15 2004 it will cost 35$/month. But it is out of sense to pay so much for a counter, as my chess site, The Chess Portal, does not generate any revenues.

It means that I will have to find a new counter. Have anybody a suggestion? The counter has to be free or cheap.

HitBoxCentral (HBC) has been a good counter and displayed detailled statistics. It has actually only two wrongs. The first wrong is that HBC only shows 100 entries (items), for example only 100 referring URLs. Extremetracking (my reserve counter) has not this limitation – its sums un unlimited number of referrers. However Extremetracking has other limitations. The second wrong by  HBC is remarkable – it can not sum “Spanish from Spain” in the category ”Visitor Language” on a weekly, monthly or yearly basis, only on a daily basis. This wrong is irritating, because the Spanish version has many visitors from Spain.

I am looking for a counter with the same functions as HBC. It is especially important that the counter - besides number of visitors and page views of course - can identify referrers, most requested pages and visitor languages (my site exists in five language versions). Visitors operative systems and browsers do not interest me.

Like anything that is free you will have to compromise somewhere but these alternatives are possibilities for you:

Analog + Report Magic http://www.analog.cx/

AddFreeStats http://addfreestats.com/

The Webalizer http://www.mrunix.net/webalizer/

GoStats http://www.gostats.com/

WebLog Expert Lite http://www.weblogexpert.com/lite.htm

BTW Nice useful site for us chess players - thank you.

For a couple more choices, I've used
ExtreMe http://www.extreme-dm.com/tracking/?home
and
SiteMeter http://www.sitemeter.com/default.asp?action=home

I like ExtreMe a little better.

Thanks to duz as well as KenAdney. I am already using ExtreMe, and will continue to use it, but it lacks the function of tracking the different languages of the visitors, and the distribution of page views. That is why I need an extra counter on my page.

Best wishes,
