Search engines work by trawling the internet and finding sites by following links, and trying random addresses and following their links.  If you leave it for long enough then chances are that search engines will find you anyway, but you can speed up the process by submitting your site to them so they can put it on their list of sites to check.

Catchme's post gives you the main post that you need, as Google is the main one that you have to worry about - that page will take details of your site and then after a few weeks then you'll start to notice your site coming up in their listings - it can be anything from a week to about 2 months in my experience.

If you go into Google and search for:

submit url search engine

Or something similar then you'll get a list of sites where you can submit your url.  You can either pay for this service (where somebody submits your site to loads of addresses for you), which makes things easier, or you can find free ways to do it (more work, but I'd say it's better this way as it saves you money).

You can also go to specific search engines (Lycos, Yahoo etc.  Search for "Search Engines".  Amusingly, if you do that in Google, then Google is only the fourth one listed!) and all of them should have areas where you can submit your site for free (or maybe after a free sign up).

It's worth just putting in a few hours to do all this - you could keep on going forever finding new search engines to submit to - so it just depends on how much time you want to put in and how much it matters, but once you've done a few of the big ones then the rest should follow.

Good luck.
