Scanjet 5100C not working

I have a Scanjet 5100C that is not working correctly. (parallel connection) The power light works, but no noise or mechanical movement is evident. Should their be a power on or initial calibration noise? Also the software says that another program is using the port, but the Task mng. says that there is nothing else running?

patrickab:  Thanks for comments related to the problem.  I have re-installed the drivers from the factory provided CD (as old as the scanner).  I'm pretty sure I did an uninstall and restart before hand, but not 100%.  I'm concerned about the complete lack of any sounds when the power cord is re-attached to the unit.
And Merry Christmas for the two of you :D ...

tts-winchester - please let us know your Operating System - what Windows is it ? And how do you know whether the scanner CDROM installation disk is the correct one for that release of Windows? Scanner software is specific to an Operating System.

Meanwhile a Merry Christmas.

OS: WIN98.  The CD came with the scanner and is the correct CD.  I'm sure it's not the most recent version, but it's a version that is correct for the OS/scanner.  The configuration had been installed and working for a long while.  I'm still suspecting the scanner itself is not working properly as it makes no noise when powered on.  However, the error messages would lead me to believe it's a software issue.
OK, thanks for that as it gets my question of whether the correct software was available out of the way.

When you go into ControlPanel/Scanners/RightclickonProperties on the Scanner listed, what do you get?

Have you recently installed some other hardware such that there is now a port conflict?

It is possible that the scanner has actually gone wrong itself but the truth is there isn't much in a scanner as they are mechanically quite simple machines. The electronics might have died but the let's deal with what we can first.

By the way does the scanner have a USB port on the back of it? I've not looked up the specs on HP's website so excuse me for asking that !

Will check, but will be several days before I'm back on-site.  I looked for USB (quickly) and unless it's sort of hidden out of the way, it is not their.  Will advise later in the week.
PashaMod - No problem at all. I considered asking for input from a moderator but concluded, as it turned out correctly, that jaikme's comments would be picked up and dealt with.

tts-winchester - as it will be several days before you pick up on this again may I ask you to just post a comment like - "I'm back and now need to solve this problem" or some such thing and I will get an automatic email from EE telling me that you're around again. Tks.

jaikme - So far you have not even attempted to help. If you are at all the expert you claim to be perhaps you can concentrate on giving help rather than anything else. This website is to help people with their IT problems. If you feel you are above giving help to people then this is not the site for you.

If you want to sound off there is the 'Lounge' area where you can vent your spleen on whoever you wish. In this and all the other areas in which people ask IT related questions you are expected to act in the interests of the questioner only. If you don't like these rules then I suggest you find another more receptive forum for your comments.

Please don't be so crass as to descend to using a language other than english in the false belief you can post rude comments in the hope that only some people can read them. I am not impressed by your contributions and I doubt that anyone else is either.

Sure in response to this comment you can be:
* abusive or
* accept that this forum needs your direct technical input or
* find another site more suited to your talents

The choice is yours.

PashaMod - you've beaten me to it - I was getting fed up with jaikme's comments so I've just posted an item in CS - now not needed.
I have downloaded and updated the driver.  I continue to have the same problem.  Message is:

Sorry, cannot access your scanner.

Your scanner is currently being accessed by another
application.  Please wait for the other application to finish or
close it to allow HP PrecisionScan access.

I have also removed every item from the Close Program window except HP items and Explorer.
