Outlok time out

I have a user connected to the campus mail server using IMAP, with outlook 2002. After having outlook open for a while the connection dies, and the user is unable to send or receive. If I close outlook and open it back again everything works fine.

When outlook is working fine, if you click file, at the bottom above exit it has " Connect to imap.xxxx.com ", this is grayed out.

When outlook is in this hung state, the same "  Connect to imap.xxxx.com ", is not grayed out. When you click on this it does nothing.

I have changed the server timout value to 5 min, but it still has no affect.

Dear CMILLER,

Has he tried deleting the email account altogether and creating it back .. DId that solve the issue.
Check with the campus mail server people if there are any issues with their imap server..

Also try repairing outlook

***********
Open outlook.
go to help --> detect and repair

***********

or

How do I reinstall and repair Outlook 2002?

I will try a detect and repair.

I just created a new profile for him on his XP computer a month ago,

I was also thinking that there could be a problem
with the server just not sure what it could be
since no one else is having the same problem.

I use imap myself running outlook2000 every couple of days I get a error
but I click ok and everything is fine. I never have to shutdown outlook
and restart it.

generally if there is a server problem this can occur.
I used to get this very very rarely but let us see if repairing outlook would solve the issue though I think there could be other solutions than this
