Please help! "Error encountered retriving data" error in some web clients!

I'm having trouble with some clients opening webmail, some clients recieve the error "Error encountered retrieving data. Click the browser's Refresh button to reload the page." when opening the inbox, however the user can open some other views.

I've tried everything I can think of, the client is an Windows 2000 machine with all the latest service pack and fixes and the latest Internet Explorer.

I've found 2 documents on www.lotus.com/support, one talks about that the issue occurs when using HTTP 1.0 over SSL.  The other talks about a Microsoft fix, Q818043, which is installed..

I've compared 2 machines, side by side, one working, the other not, and found nothing different in for example zone settings, IE options, etc...

Can anyone help me ?

regards,

Just a few questions to start with:

Server Domino version? Both clients exactly identical? What happens if users switch places, travels the error with the user or not? What message you find in the log-file of the server? What rights do both users have on the mail-files?
I suppose you are talking about iNotes ?

Completely clearing the browser cache may help solve this problem.

cheers,

You only get the error on the Inbox, but not other views?  What are the good/bad URLs?

Is this iNotes or webmail? For iNotes, is the whole page an error, or do some parts of the page display?

The Domino Server is version 6.5.  It's always the machine that fails, not matter which user I try.  The same users work fine on other machines.   Thu users have manage right on their mail-files.  I can't see any new messages in the log file when the user gets the error...

Yes, this is iNotes, clearing the browser cache/history/cookies didn't help either...

The page loads fine, except the contents of the inbox f.ex. don't load

Here is an example of an URL, it looks the same on a machine that fails and a machine that loads the page fine....
https://xxxx.xxxx.xx/mail/xxxxxxxxx/xxxxx.nsf/iNotes/Mail/?OpenDocument&PresetFields=s_ViewLabel;Inbox,s_ViewName;(%24Inbox)&KIC&UNH=uvr9k7sr6ceu3f3hed1fgeig7do
This is a windows problem that has been mentioned in this tech-note

http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?rs=899&uid=swg21155029

And for sure related to the fix pack from windows.. weekly updates do cause this issue.. But if you do it through SP/fixpacks it should resolve the problem. I would rather say it as bug if it occurs in one machine and not in others.

Suggestion: Reinstall the OS with all service packs

the machines have that hotfix installed...  I also tried reinstalling it manually, didn't help

Of about 1000 machines we manage, there are maybe 5 machines which have this problem that I know of

Surely there is another solution than a complete reinstall of the OS ?
Try Reinstallin the fixpacks by uninstalling all the hotfix from control panel

I just tried that, still the same :(
You may also want to try out Mozilla for a browser.  iNotes is supported on Mozilla too for 6.5.  It's a lot easier than reinstalling Windows :-)

On the machines you are having problems with, are they shared ?  I mean, do several people use iNotes from those workstations ?

cheers,

Tom
Wild guessing here!

Somewhere the data transports are fawlty. IE doesn't tell you which error is encountered? Maybe it's more a networking problem, because everything else seems the same. Although if both PC's have the same setup, they must have the same TCP/IP buffer sizes, etc. Is there anything the same on the 5 machines that show the problem? Installed by the same person?

Anyway, you already looked on the Microsoft website? Nothing there?
How is the error displayed? As a page, a popup in IE, something else? I cannot find the error message in the mail database itself, nor in any standard documentation of Notes. I might not have all of them...

I've not tried another browser, my guess is that it would work...  Something tells me this is an IE thing...   I'll try that and let you know

This is the only error we get, nothing is logged in the event viewer, nothing on the domino server..    The error is displayed as an IE error message box
Try searching google on "error encountered retrieving data":
    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=error+encountered+retrieving+data

Most promising seems to me (but still it doesn't tell you why and how to solve it):
    http://www.leccotech.com/tech_support_patch_readme_db2udb.htm
    http://www.devtech.com/SiteSurfer/doc/help/refberr.htm

I'd say not IE, but network and/or parameters.
Hi Fletchs,

I had the same problem on my Domino server running version 6.5, using i-notes and I have solved the problem by adding the line

iNotes_wa_GZIP_Disable=1

into the file "notes.ini" while the server is down.  Then restart it !

The problem is that the domino server 6.5 use the GZip compression to send data to the server, and it looks like it cause some problems on IE....  So by addind this line, the GZip compression is disable and there should be no more error !!

Hope it helps !!

It is confirmed this is a bug from Lotus ...

http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21116370
The one machine working could be using HTTP 1.1 or 1.2.. Check the IE settings for both the machines
Any updates about the problem ??

We had a similar problem when the inbox contained a memo with a ü character in the subject. Some workstations would get "Error encountered retrieving data" and for other this would work just fine.

The problem was due to the com objects registered by MSXML3.DLL, it turns out that it registers the same objects as in MSXML.DLL. The workstations creating XMLDocument with MSXML.DLL showed the view without any problem.

If this is the case try the following :

unregister MSXML3.DLL by typing xmlinst -u msxml3
(regsvr32 -u msxml3.dll does not delete all references in the registry)
register MSXML.DLL by typing regsvr32 MSXML.DLL
close and reopen internet explorer

This error may occur when a new mail pop ups in iNotes from IE.

If the user doesn't have admin rights for that PC(Win2000), then this message will occur.

Try to browse from another PC which u have Admin rights.

this is purely with NT login and PC rights.

Give Admin rights to the user  for that PC and look for the message. I am sure, this will resolve ur problem.

I had this error before for one of our user.

Hope it helps.
HansVe,

Welcome.  The information you provided is a good, rare insite.

Please be aware that there are lots of open questions on EE that are old, abandoned by the question's poser.  This is one these those... notice how the history before you came in ran from early January o early Feburary?

Anyway, hope to hear from you on lots of current questions.
I had the same issue. HansVe's solution solved my problem. I deleted the email (from a Notes full client) and presto!
