Installing Symantec av client on workstation

We currently use Symantec antivirus corporate edition. One of our workstations will not install the cient. The workstation uses xp pro and when you push the client from the corporate edition server it shows as they it installs the client. When you go to the client there is no Symantec antivirus client. Thank you Mark

Sounds like a good solution, however Symantec was installed by a consultant and he only downloaded the software as an installation directly to the server.

hmmm....is it a single installer package?  Like....  setup.exe.  Or is there an entire folder with multiple subfolders...?

Can you burn the downloaded package to CD then take it to the appropriate workstation and follow my instructions above?

Your other option is go to the workstation....

Browse to the network location of the installation package and install from there....

Start
Run
\\server_where_file_is\C$\Download\setup.exe      <-- obviously you need to modify this as appropriate.  You also need administrative permission (assuming you have) to access an ADMIN share (C$).
Just a setup.exe.
Move the setup file to your workstation.  Run it from there.  See if it will allow a standalone install for a workstation.  But make sure you set it your AV client to MANAGED not unmanaged.

Let me know how it goes, good luck.

I did copy an exe to the desktop and ran it. However, it only went to the windows
installer screen and then disappeared.
Are you sure there isn't MORE than just the setup.exe file?  No sub folders or anything?  Maybe you need to contact Symantec and have them send you a copy of the media (i.e. the corp ed on CD).

My corp edition has MANY folders, not just a single setup.exe file.  How technical are you?  So I can know how far to go with this?
I take any suggestions, no matter how technical. I will be leaving in 12 minutes, but will check back tomorrow. Thanks
Same....I'm off at 4 EST  let's try again tommorrow....I'll check my CD out and see how it's laid out.

We don't have the CD. Do you know the Symantec address to obtain the client for download? Thanks
I guess before I post a link to the product, I should ask if you licenced to use Symantec? You said " Symantec was installed by a consultant and he only downloaded the software" so that makes the paranoid side of me wonder if the consultant just pulled down the software without purchasing it first.
Did you purchase Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition? I just want to make sure.
yes, it is licensed.  We did get a copy of the client install, but it still failed to install on the client machine.
This is what I have done so far. I downloaded SAVCECLT.EXE and copied it to
the workstations desktop and ran the executable. I received the error 25002 there
was an error loading the navinst extension dll. So then I created a logon script and
ran the script on the workstation. The script showed it installing and when I went to
add or remove programs it showed Symantec antivirus client, however when I look
on the hard drive there is no client. When I open outlook I receive the following
error message, 'The add-in c:\program files\symantec-client_security\symantec antivirus... could not be installed or loaded. This problem may be resolved by using detect and repair on the help menu. Unable to load c:\program files\symantec_client_security... You may be out of memory, out of system resources, or missing a .dll file.
Ok, Symantec ha an article on this error with the Symantec antivirus client:
http://tinyurl.com/2mk39

The 3 main reasons this error can happen are:
"The following causes have been identified for this error:

User has insufficient rights to uninstall
Corrupted copy of Navinsnt.dll or Navins95.dll
Incomplete or corrupted installation or upgrade of Symantec AV"

So, are you sure you are logging into the machine with an Administrator-level account? How about running this install while logged in as the local Administrator on the XP box, not using a domain Administrator-level account?
I will try your suggestions tomorrow morning. Thank you.
I have tried all of the above without success. The user has administrative rights, check the dll and went to the registry and removed Symantec. Does anyone have other suggestions. Thanks
If possible, I might just reimage the problem workstation at this point and then retry the install.

If you can't do that, you may need to uninstall the AV (if it appears to be installed), manually Search for folders named Symantec or Norton and delete them all, and manually search the registry for all references to Symantec or Norton or NAV and delete them all (Backup first!).

Once you're REALLY sure the machine doesn't even know what the word Symantec means, then try the local install.

Of course, make sure you're rebooting to effect all the registry changes when you alter the registry (either for my manual cleaning, or as recommended above) before any reinstalls.  Also, be sure you're rebooting after the client install to allow all the NAV hooks to complete.  I'm sure you have been doing this, but I thought I'd mention it.

If all the above doesn't work, and the same installer works on other machines (no corrupt DLL's), I'd suspect a hardware issue (Bad RAM?)
You know, one question I have not asked you about on this XP machine is, does it have the Administrative shares enabled? The "ADMIN$" share specifically? I know that share is needed to remotely install the NAV client, and if it is not enabled, the install will fail. I don't know if the share is needed when you do a local install, though. I wouldn't think it would need it when the install is local.
Yes the machine is shared.

if you are doing nt push installs. make sure netbios and the default admin shares for all drive letters are enabled on the client workstation, since i think the network installer uses permissions based on the ntfs and shares to remotely install the program
I will be running a scan for a virus that could be causing this problem. If no success, I will try the last few suggestions. Thanks, I will update you when this is done.

I have a similar problem where the Windows Installer just disappear and nothing installed.
Then I found this from Release notes for Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 8.01
:

AV does NOT install when the ntfsdisable8dot3namecreation registry value is set
Symptom: AV would not install when the following registry value is set to 1:HKey_Local_Machine\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Filesytem\ntfsdisable8dot3namecreation . This flag is used to disable the creation of new corresponding short file name entries in the file system, and is an option that may be put in place via Group Policy to tighten up security.
Resolution: Changed several occurrences of GetShortPathName and LongPathToShortPath in InstallScript handling so that success is not assumed, and so that the logic can handle failures within the calls of these functions.

After reset the registry, the problem is solved.
