RedHat Enterprise - good solution for webserver?

delphiheaven asked
Last Modified: 2013-12-06

Is Red Hat Enterprise a good plattform for a high-traffic website?
The offer which I am thinking about is the following:

(Text taken from the webpage of the dedicated server company:)

"What does Red Hat Enterprise come with?

EXT3 filesystem
Apache 2.0.46
PHP 4.3.2
Nano 1.2.1
MySQL 3.23.58
BIND 9.2.2
Sendmail "

Does anyone have experiences with RHE? Can it easily be upgraded with OpenSSL etc.?

I like RHEL.  I use Enterprise ES for web server, email server, my DNS etc.  I also use it as my network gateway to the Internet so it acts as my Firewall.

I've also got RHEL for my file server serving Samba shares for my Windows clients.

It's been pretty rock solid and I haven't really come across anything better than Red Hat Network, I can even patch my server or install new packages from any web browser anywhere on the net (From Work, home etc).

Pretty good stuff.

http://rhn.redhat.com for info on Red Hat Network.

Just a note, RHEL 3.0 is the same kernel as RedHat 9 under a different numbering system.  It is just qualified differently than the soon to be discontinued RedHat 9 and the default kernel is built with SMP support, etc.  The last RHEL was RedHat 8, etc.  Because of this, RHEL is still free.  It is just that you pay for support from the Redhat Network.  We have several Linux boxes of various states in our lab, and we help qualify drivers for storage arrays, HBAs, etc.
