Windows XP desktop shortcuts gone!
While helping my neighbor I rebooted his pc(windows xp) and all of his desktop shortcuts disappeared. The only thing I did was remove some programs from his start folder. I did not think any of them would have caused this problem. I am now not even able to add any shortcuts to the desktop..... Help, I am in danger of losing the good will of my neighbor.....

seems a bit obvious, but maybe it just booted into a different user's logon????
by default, a new user has no icons....and maybe the auto-logged on user has little rights to the system, it could be a guest account

I think dneufeld might be right...this has happened to me recently too.
LucF's post sounds likely but syntax is off a bit, should be
right click the desktop =>Arrange Icons By=>Show Desktop Icons
If this is right, give points to LucF, not me.

Snipped from a usegroup article I found when having the same problem...

Control/Alt/Delete - When the Windows Task Manager dialog box appears, go
to Processes, find Explorer.exe highlight it and choose End Process.
Keep the task manager open then select the File menu and then New Task
(Run). When the Create New Task dialog box appears, type in Explorer and
press the OK button. Windows Explorer should restart complete with the
Taskbar and Start button.
If still nothing: Go back to the Task Manager/File/New Task and type in
msconfig. On the General Tab choose Expand File. Or
Go to Start/Run and type in CMD:
expand x:\i386\explorer.ex_ c:\windows\explorer.exe

Right-click Desktop, go to Desktop Tab, Customize Desktop button. Remove the tick in the "run desktop cleanup...".
Failing that, go to search, and find *.lnk
Its possible the shortcuts have been moved to a different profile. If you find them, copy to All Users --> Desktop folder.

what operating system are you using home or pro?
if using pro you can check your group policy
- user configuration
- administrative templates
- desktop
everything here is by default "not configured"
check the following policy
- Hide and disable all items on the desktop
also compmgmt.msc and check to make sure that the user that you are logged in as has the appropriate permissions.

I am sure this has been said but try right clicking on the desktop then choose 'arrange icons by' then just make sure you check the 'show desktop icons' option.
