Newbie Question: What's FreeFile and File Number All About?

As a systems administrator for over 10 years, I'm trying to make the jump from VBScript to VB.NET without going to a programming class. I'm doing this by rewriting a VB6 .dll that doesn't work under .NET and learning as I go.

I've got a half dozen VB.NET books I'm trying to learn from, but none of them are letting me understand the importance of the FreeFile function and file numbers.

Why is this important?

Any answers or pointers to a web page that explains the why would be greatly appreciated. (I've already Googled and searched EE, but all the references I've found explain how to do it, now why.)

Okay, that is giving me a better understanding.

I'm using the BinaryReader and BinaryWriter to Byte through a file. The VB6 function Opened the file, and then used Gets and Puts.

Here's a link to my thread asking for help with BinaryReader : <https://www.experts-exchange.com/Programming/Programming_Languages/Dot_Net/Q_20874019.html>. Neither of the helping experts used FreeFile and neither do my VB.NET books.

So I should just ignore the FreeFile function and file number as I rewrite the code, right?

And that's why planocz's 101 VB.NET Samples don't contain any FreeFiles and file numbers, right? ;-)
