accessing array values for each of the arrays in an array

We are parsing some db tables and getting data associated with an individual

for the sake of variable storage as we do additional parsing through data tables, we thyen dump this variable into anther array;
and subsequent persons get added to the array;

now I want to get something from all the $person's in the $people array,  for example, add all the $person['num'] values together.  Created a little function to run;

function mineArray($Array,$Element){
      while (list($key, $val) = each($Array)) {
      return $mydata;

obviously what I am getting at is the $$val[$Element] would translate into $val giving us the next "person" array in the "people" array...  and we want to get the ['num'] out of that $val (person[]) array.

Hope that made sense.  I think previously I have used a $people[$val][$Element] now that I think of it, but can't find the page that referenced that , and am looking for a definitive answer.

The above solution by mcmahon s is right - I just wanted to clarify something in your code.  You reference $$val - this is variable variable notation.  This means the variable whose name is the contents of $val - please see below for more info

echo $$val."\n";
