C HD using ms-dos compaitable mode

As always I reformatted my HD in the usual fashion. Afterwards I went to the CONTROL PANEL, SYSTEM and did not see any ? marks. I then went to performance and it says C and D drive using ms dos compatibility modes. Now I have not yet formatted the D drive. I talked to a friend of mine who builds computers and he said I made an error in formatting. Well one can hardly make an error since there is one command. My system does not seem slow.

I also was getting remarks about finding new hardware which I knew already was working, but it still wanted to search for a driver for the hardware. I went and updated the program on the Intel chipset which eliminated most of the problems except the one above.

sincerely

HD size recognized.
The hard disk controller in your computer was not detected by Windows. Recognized
The hard disk controller was removed from the current configuration in Device Manager. No.
There is a resource conflict between the hard disk controller and another hardware device. No conflicts
The Windows protected-mode driver is missing or damaged. what is the drivers command name so that I can extract it. Also where would it be pasted. I plan actually to put it on a floppy and when I go to driver up date I can reference the floppy.

If a driver that is listed in the Config.sys file is named, contact the driver's manufacturer to determine whether there is a version of the driver that enables protected-mode access in Windows. Ok, I did reference a cd rom driver in the config.sys. When I backed up all my programs, some how the floppy was blank for this item. Guess I need to go to Samsung's website.

Oh, it is not a Samsung HD. They do not make them. I will have to take my machine appart to find out the details.

I will get back to you

Sincerely

gonzal13(Joe)
The HD is an IBM. The site to download the hd id if ftp://software.ibm/pc/pccbbs/netvista_drivers/pz2z24us.exe
but will not download.
First I still cannot download the above driver.

In devices under HD it states:

Intel(R)82801DB Ultra ATA Storage controller-24CB Device working properly No Conflicts
Primary Ultra ATA Controler  Device working properly No Conflicts
Secondary Ultra ATA Controller  Device working properly No Conflicts

This software supposedly identifies exactly the HD installed and then recommends the drivers.

ftp://software.ibm/pc/pccbbs/netvista_drivers/pz2z24us.exe

Under performance it states:
Compatibility mode paging reduces overall system performance.
Drive C and D is using MS-Dos compatibility mode fie system.
There are no question marks under system.

As mentioned, I only reformatted the C drive. I honestly do not see a decreased overal performance.

How do I enable protected-mode hard disk interrupt handling?

Sincerely

Gonzal13(Joe)
The page will still not open and download.

ftp://software.ibm/pc/pccbbs/netvista_drivers/pz2z24us.exe

Try this one:

http://ftp.cs.msu.su/DOS/pz2z24us.exe

Good luck

I don't know if you read this:

Downloading the update
----------------------
1. Click the file link to download the file from the Web page.
2. When prompted, select a drive and directory in which to save the downloaded file.

Extracting the update
---------------------
1.  Click Start, select Find or Search, then click Files and folders.
2.  Type pz2z24us.exe in the search field, then click Find Now. This will locate the pz2z24us.exe file you just downloaded.
3.  Double-click the icon for pz2z24us.exe.
4.  Click Next. Read the license agreement.
5.  Click I accept the terms in the license agreement.
6.  Click Next. Ensure that "Save files in folder" is set to C:\IBMTOOLS\DRIVERS\PZ2Z24US.
7.  Click Next.
8.  Follow the onscreen prompts to create the 2 needed diskettes.
9.  When prompted, insert the floppy disk and click on the NEXT button. Remember to label this disk as "DFT Bootable".

Updating the firmware
---------------------
Please follow the instructions provided below to update the firmware of your IBM Deskstar hard drive.

Note: The firmware update program has mouse support enabled, so that you can use the mouse to click on any of the options presented to have the update process started.

1.  With your system powered off, insert the disk labeled DFT Bootable, then turn on your system.  If your system is powered on, you can use one of the following options:

o  If you are running Windows, turn the system off by following the shutdown process employed by windows, or
o  Press the power button until the system turns itself off (this option is not recommended if running windows, but can be used if running DOS), or
o  Press <Ctrl><Alt><Del> keys to restart the system.  In order to use this option, make sure that you have already inserted the disk labeled DFT bootable in the system.  (This option is not recommended if running windows, but can be used if running DOS).

2.  Your system will start loading the firmware update program.
3.  You will be presented with a license agreement.  Read through it and click on the I AGREE button.
4.  The firmware update program will start searching for all IBM hard drives connected to the system.  When the search is completed, a message will be shown at the top of the screen to inform you about the results (this section is named INFORMATION). There are two possible messages that can be shown, depending on the results:

o  If no IBM Deskstar hard drives are found or if the IBM drive does not require the update:
Your drive(s) does not require a firmware update. Please press the EXIT button to terminate the program.

o  If IBM Deskstar hard drives that require the update are found:
At least one of your drives can be updated to a newer firmware level.  To start the update, please press the
         UPDATE Firmware button.

5.  If one or more of your hard drives require a firmware update, press the UPDATE FIRMWARE button as specified by the program, and follow the instructions that will be presented to you thereafter. If no update is required, just press the EXIT button to terminate the program.
6.  In addition to the above message, you will also see a list of  all the drives that require the update.  This list can be found under the section named DEVICE LIST.
7.  Once the firmware is installed in all drives that required it, the program will show you the following message:

Your drive(s) does not require a firmware update. Please press the EXIT button to terminate DTF.

This occurs because after installing the firmware, another search is quickly done to make sure that all drives have received the update.  If all drives have it, you will see the above message.
8.  Now that all IBM Deskstar hard drives in your system have been updated, press the EXIT button to terminate the program.
9.  Once you see this message, remove the floppy disk from your system and turn it off by pressing the power button, then turn it back on.
If you prefer not to use the power button, you can press the <Ctrl><Alt><Del> keys to restart the system.  Now your system will start booting and you can use it as usual.

Maybe u need the motherboard driver for IDE ATA/ATAPI CONTROLLER.
Blue-Zee:

First of all your style of writing comments is excellent. You are very conscious of details and do not assume that the questioner has allot of experience.

Well the other site work fine. I loaded and executed exactly as you detailed it. IT came up that I did not need a firmware update.

I still have the same message. C and D drive using ms dos compatibility modes.

I will try to deleate the details in the system devices page and see if the PC comes up with an alternative..

gonzal13(Joe)
Have you installed all necessary motherboard drivers?
The drivers after a second reformat are working and recognized as before. Prior to that I did install the IBM drivers. I have two video cards. The older one is not supported and I do not have the drivers for it. The second one according to the message is working but requests the 'master video card to work first" Guess I will get another video board this weekend to see if it solves the video problem. Next comes the IBM hard drive of which I downloaded the file and insure the motherboard is updated.

Hi everyone!

Well I called my friendly fabricator that I have known for years and told him that I had a Rage 128 Pro card that was not functioning. I had another hd that is on a dual boot system and I could see through the c drive. Using the update drivers I went to d:\windows\support and it still would not make the driver for the video card operational.  Well with hisadvice I went to windrivers .com and got my video card working along ith the other video card on my other monitor.

Now I have two hds. Both are independent. I go to control panel, performance and it says that c & d  usingms-dos compatibility mode fole system. I do not know where to look to change it. I have reformatted twice and installed Win98se twice, because it would not pick up my Lan Card and the two video cards.

NOw the hardrives state the following(which are operational)
Primary IDE Controller single fifo
Secondary IDE controller singo fifo
standard dual IDE PCI IDE controller

I can also look at the D drive from the C drive but not visa versa.

Now are the drivers above generic. Should it not reflect the brands of the two Hard drives? It is not a new situation and I hav never had any problem.

I just have a question about the compatibility mode.

Sincerely

BillDll if you are around I want to tellyou something related to a xxxx.dl caused a failure in module... for autodesk 2002. Some  how I have your comments to get around this problem that worked!

Joe,

I'm out of ideas except taking your PC to pieces and glue them together again.
;-)

But I will not give up. I will be back!

blue-zee:

All I can say is thanks. For some reason it works in ms dos compatibility mode. I love this computer so much that I am on it 6 hours a day. I shall stay with the compatibility mode problem at this moment and the HD configuration also while I am ahead!!!

Oh if you know anyone that has had reinstallation problems with Autodesk 2002, BillDl has the answer. I found his comments some where and saved them. I ran into the problem 6 months ago and I had forgot I saved his comments from some site I was on, maybe this one although I doubt it.

Frustrated since I was at that time working on a patent, I bought 2004 lite and installed it.

The autodesk site had no reference to the problem. In Billdll's notes he referenced a site on Autodesk site, way deep inside and well hidden so as to provide for for frustration. He provided the solution referencing the obscure site. I am very thankful for his comments that I discovered accidently while I was reinstalling programs from the cd roms.

Sincerely
gonzal13(Joe)
Is your motherboard much older than your HDs,or vice versa?
No, the hard drive is as old as the Intel motherboard. I did not see this comment until I reformatted only the c drive twice. Everythig is working fine.

gonzal13(Joe)
pz2z24us.exe I finally downloaded the file!!

gonzal13(Joe)

Joe,

Glad you made it through!

I have not made the changes yet since the text from the program says to back up my HD which is backed up. Now i have as stated above:Primary IDE Controller single fifo
Secondary IDE controller singo fifo
standard dual IDE PCI IDE controller

It took two reformats to come up with these statements.

What will the program do?  I accepted your answer sinc you seemed to know what you are talking about.

gonzal13(Joe)

Thanks for the help. I shall wait for your comments before proceeding.
