sir ,

       i hve RH 8 linux installed on my system.
There is a Lan Network with NIC of RealTech.

in /etc/hosts
 there is an entry

127.0.0.1  karana  localhost
                                  localhost.localdomain

But in win98 ,we have a class c lan network with my ip address 192.168.1.6 .

i want  to make the same ip address for my
linux network . how can i do that?

our lan network is set up using a hub with 8
slots . no server present .

suppose there is another lan user say 'Maheesh' with  a /etc/hosts entry
as
127.0.0.1 maheesh localhost localhost.local..

how can i set up a connection .
wat i meant is - how to send a message to
karana from maheesh  ?

For RH8 you should run
redhat-config-network
as root. Click new... the rest should be more or less selfexplanatory:-).
CC liddler for the loopback address. This will be bound to the (dummy) loopback interface. It's a way of making sure there is a "faked network" for all those tools that need a network to work, but doesn't really need a network:-)... Running local servers etc.

... or you can create a file named (of modify it if it's there) "/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0" and put/modify following lines in it:

DEVICE=eth0
BOOTPROTO=static
BROADCAST=192.168.1.255
IPADDR=192.168.1.6
NETMASK=255.255.255.0
NETWORK=192.168.1.0
ONBOOT=yes
TYPE=Ethernet

all this as "root" and type command "service network restart". Done!
