Hi,
I am running Windows 2000 and i am using a 17 inch flat screen monitor. I cannot change the resolution and I receive the following error message Primary Display Adapter is not Configured Properly.

From the Control Panel, device Manager, I cannot see Monitor.

The computerand the monitor are both Dell

Thanks in advance Cathy

Your monitor doesn't have a driver installed for it, so you are stuck in VGA resolution.  Have you tried to add the monitor manually, by running the add hardware wizard?  You specify that you want to add a monitor, and look up the brand in the list it gives you.  If it's not there, do you have a cd from the monitor manufacturer?

I have tried to add a monitor using the wizard...there is no option for monitor so I chose the VGA setting and used the manufacturer's disk - Dell and asked it to use the .inf file on the disk. Said it didn't recognise it and used the deafult one instead...c:/winnt/inf.ini.

MSgeek,
Again it doesn't give me chance to add in a monitor. I have followed the instructions in the links above.

Other comment.
The graphics card in the machine is not recognised either. I don't know what it is. Could this be the problem and is there any way of finding out what the graphics car it is.

Install Aida32 to print out what the graphics card is:http://www.aida32.hu/aida32.php

It could be that your graphics card is faulty, in which case you should try another one and see if that solves your problem.

Do you have another spare video card or can you borrow one from a true friend?

Unfortunately no...don't have either.

Just a not ....Can I point out that the computer is working fine otherwise and the monitor does work but I just can't change the resolution and the message above comes up. Also I don't know what type of graphics card it is.

Your problem in not being able to change resolutions may be the graphics card - changing the card will tell us whether it is the problem or the monitor driver is the problem.  The Aida32 program will tell you what card it is, but it won't really tell us if the card is malfunctioning - only a substitution will do that.

Ok, so you are saying everything works fine, but the monitor device driver is not present.  That will definitely prevent you from selecting other resolutions.  Did you try to install the drivers MSGeek posted?

Callador,
I tried to...downloaded them on to the c:/drive ....went through add new hardware wizard and monitor was not an option only VGA was anything like an option but it wouldn't use them instead it used the defualt VGA settings.

When you choose hardware device to add, do you see Plug and Play Monitor as a choice?
