I just took over as the new NT Admin with a local compny supporting 35 users. Also, I had no instructions from the last (fired) employee. Problem is that we are running Veritas Backup Exec 9.0 and the incremental backups (set to run M-TR 9:00 pm) are failing and the full backups (set to run Fridays at 9:00 pm are failing with the error codes:

Final error code: a000848c HEX
Final error description: Unable to attach to one of the drives

Unable to attach to \\ATHMANSRV03\Microsoft Exchange Public Folders.
Unable to attach to \\ATHMANSRV03\Resources$.
Unable to attach to \\ATHMANSRV03\ATHMANSRV03.log.
Unable to attach to \\ATHMANSRV03\CertEnroll.
Unable to attach to \\ATHMANSRV03\wwwroot.
Unable to attach to \\ATHMANSRV03\Address.
Unable to attach to \\ATHMANSRV03\Microsoft Information Store\First Storage Group.
Unable to attach to \\ATHMANSRV03\Microsoft Exchange Mailboxes.
Unable to attach to \\ATHMANSRV03\System?State.

Also, suspect tells me that permissions are set incorrectly or ???? I'm dead in the water here and need some HELP....Please assist!

haal33,

Give Veritas a ring, you will need to go into the registry and reset some keys that control using various ports and attaching as an anamous user.  You will also need to install v. 9.1, new scsi adaptor drivers from Adaptec, etc. etc, and reset the user profile used, and more.  Also make sure that you have remote agent running on ATHMANSRV03.

It was running fine for the past few weeks after looking at the Job History up until: 1/26/04. Do you have an idea of what may have caused the incremental and full backups to fail...also the desktops are OK...scheduled daily @ 10:00 am...Anymore ideas before going into the registry or calling Veritas...

Check in Services.

Thanks...and the remote agent is not running or even listed in services on Srv03......I'll attempt to reinstall the remote agent first.....

Once you get the agent running if you still continue to have issues I have found that the backup job will return this error code if the login name and password set  under credentials has been changed or removed.  I experienced this problem as well and identified the above to be the cause.  The X-admin used their login to do the backup.  When he was removed then there was not a valid user on the machine to back up.  I had to create another login and password and assign it to the job.

That sounds like what happened...Can you walk me through creating another login and password and assign it to the job.

I will have to wait until 7 pm (EST-2/18/04) tonight  to perform all the above. I will then grant the points to the appropiate...At least I'm on the right track...

Just curios to see how things were progressing.  I am on EST as well and should be here until midnight.  (Isn't it fun to be working after hours while everyone has gone home and probably has no concept of what IT is doing to help?)  I say that sarcastically of course.

I apologize for the delay here due to that nasty virus on yesterday and precaution measures. I'm unable to re-install the Backup exec remote agent (service) on that server (srv03).

Server03 was built with Exchange 2000, DNS, DHCP, and PDC supporting 35 users.. Have you heard of such a thing....Also, while looking at task manager I see that Veritas Backup Exec 9.0 is running (where??? or pertaining to the dialog boxes)...Can you help? This is a wierd set-up, can you help?
Strange set-up indeed.

What you need to do is install the Remote Agent from the server where Backup Exec is installed.
Via Add/Remove Programs, you can at some point install remote agents at servers.

If you tried this already: Check if the Remote Agent Service is still installed on the server. If so, disable it and get it out of the system.
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\<Service Name>] is where you'll find it.

Restart the server and check if you can install the Agent.

Finally, I was able to re-install the remote agent from the source server.....I'll have to manually run the incremental backup at 12:00 pm today...and I'll get back to you...I'm assumming this was probably the main issue...I'll reply later today with results, but so far you will definitely get all the points...VERY HELPFULL!
