How do Roaming profiles work?

Long post alert......

Recently, some network changes were made and the ports on our switches were changed from Auto Sense to 100 full duplex. This played hell with some of our PC's because of the configuration of the local network card.

As a result, users were taking and age to log off and if the user used a different machine to log on, the roaming profile became corrput.

My understanding is that when a user with a roaming profile logs on, it is applied from the network location specified on their user account. When the user logs off, the amended profile is copied from the locally stored profile back to the server location.

In an attempt to solve the issue, I renamed the old roaming profile folder on the network and created a new profile by geting the user to login agian. I then copied all the information from the renamed roaming profile folder to the new folder.

This had mixed reuslts. I got the desktop looking the same as before but any application information was lost. Outlook profile was gone, Internet access, printers etc. etc.

Has anyone any ideas how to resolve this more successfully? Does the local profile have a part to play?

1stITMAN. Which logs would you like me to check? Server side or Workstation side? I've already used that Like BTW. Cheers.

DiamondMan: Yep, I'm aware of the other files like NTUSER.dat. I've copied them as well....

We do back up our profiles. Do I need to restore the whole roaming profile or just the NTUSER.DAT type files?

Must Admit, I deleted the Folder from the documents and settings folder rather than using the Control Panel, System, Advanced, User Profiles option. What are the implications here?
Workstation and Server side just copy and paste the errors here should give us an idea of whats going on!!

Thanks Guys,

Split the points because 1stITMAN took the time to do some research and Diamondman confirmed my thinking but supplied a couple of new ideas.
