I have recently set up a DNS Server, and I configured my domain on that server, that is going to work also as a Web Server and E-mail Server.  I receive e-mails from private domains, and if you try to go to www.mydomain.com you can access the website with no problems.  Now, since the day I put mydomain.com to work I have never received e-mails from yahoo, hotmail or Terra, and the messages come back to those accounts with information like:

Hotmail:

This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification.

THIS IS A WARNING MESSAGE ONLY.

YOU DO NOT NEED TO RESEND YOUR MESSAGE.

Delivery to the following recipients has been delayed.

       user@mydomain.com

Terra:

Hi. This is the mailer-daemon. I'm afraid I wasn't able to
deliver your message to the following addresses. This is a
permanent error; I've given up. Sorry it didn't work out.

<user@mydomain.com>:
Sorry, I wasn't able to establish an SMTP connection. (#4.4.1)
I'm not going to try again; this message has been in the queue too long.

-----

So, I don't know exactly what's going on, but I suspect is has something to do with "black listing" of my IP address....

What could be happenning????

Thanks for any help.

Ok... Was just waiting until somebody answers to give more details.... My domain is x-countries.com, and my IP  is 200.63.220.68.  I'm using RedHat Linux, and have Bind, Sendmail and Apache running.

Some valid e-mail users on my server are: jmantilla, xct.

Thanks for your help....

I can see what the problem is. The DNS records are valid:

wilowisp> host -t mx x-countries.com
x-countries.com mail is handled by 10 ns.x-countries.com.
wilowisp> host ns.x-countries.com
ns.x-countries.com has address 200.63.220.68

But an attempt to connect to your mail server just hangs:

wilowisp> telnet ns.x-countries.com 25
Trying 200.63.220.68...

So either there's a problem at your end and your Sendmail isn't listening or responding to SMTP connections the Internet or your ISP is blocking inbound access on 25/TCP.

Well, I have Sendmail listening on all my interfaces (public and private), and from some external addresses I do receive e-mail (understand "external" as those addresses that doesn't belong to the range assigned from iana to my ISP, Satnet - Ecuador).  One of those servers is the MX for domain santoscmi.com, and the other is the MX for nabors-ecu.com.  So the "SMTP blocking access" is something I have doubths about...

The sendmail.mc activates the daemon like this:

DAEMON_OPTIONS(`Port=smtp,Addr=127.0.0.1, Name=MTA')
DAEMON_OPTIONS(`Port=smtp,Addr=200.63.220.68, Name=MTA')
DAEMON_OPTIONS(`Port=smtp,Addr=192.168.0.2, Name=MTA')
DAEMON_OPTIONS(`Port=smtp,Addr=10.0.2.1, Name=MTA')

And from a local dial-up from a different ISP I tried telnet'ing my server on port 25, and it was successfull....

Some other ideas????
I wonder

By the way.....  this is from my server....

[root@ns root]# ping x-countries.com
ping: unknown host x-countries.com

???? Any hint ????

If you comment out all of those DAEMON_OPTIONS lines in your sendmail.mc sendmail will listen for connections on all interfaces. That is the preferred config if it isn't desired to limit sendmail to a specific IP.

I should have mentioned that I tried the 'telnet ns.x-countries.com 25' from three geographically diverse Internet sites and had the same results from all of them, sorry... That probably explains the results you see from Yahoo, etc. Try the above and let me know when you've done so and I'll check again.

Author

Ok.  I commented out the DAEMON_OPTIONS in my sendmail.mc, and after restarting the service, I tried to do a telnet ns.x-countries.com 25 from a local dial-up, and it succeded...

220 ns.x-countries.com ESMTP Sendmail 8.12.5/8.12.5; Thu, 19 Feb 2004 11:35:34 - 0500
....
...

This dial-up I'm using is from a different ISP, and gives me the 200.41.92.48 IP address... their DNS server is 200.31.6.34... I was starting to think that could be something about my ISP blocking the SMTP traffic, but then, how can I telnet from other networks..... could it be that the ISPs in Ecuador have something like a peering beetwen them, and that is why I do receive e-mails from servers in Ecuador, but not from other places?????  Well, you are the expert, and I'm only guessing....

And... what could it be the reason I can't resolv x-countries.com (only the domain) from my Linux Box??? I need to put the name of the host to have an answer on PING....

Thanks for your time and help...

I can't tell what the exact problem is, but neither your system nor 200.41.92.48 seems to be reachable from the US. It may be some sort of routing problem to those networks.
