SFC /scannow asks for Windows XP Service Pack 2 CD ?

Hi All,

I am trying to fix another issue that I have posted here ...

https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/20916018/Windows-Explorer-hangs-after-being-idle.html

and during this process I have tried running SFC to see if maybe the user has something corrupted.  When I try and run the application it gives me a dialog asking me to insert the Windows XP Service Pack 2 CD.  Since I have the latest production version (1a) installed, I am curious how I can produce what it wants.

Thank you.

Regards,
John

I tried it with the Dell Windows XP Professional CD that came with the system.
Hi swabeui,

It's likely looking for a system file that is Pre-SP2 - a new hotfix recently installed.

At this point, I have no idea how to force it to work.

I will check support for you.

Try copying the XP CD's I386 folder to c:\windows\I386 and then when SFC asks for the CD Point it to c:\windows\I386
CAUSE
This issue can occur if the computer security policy is set to allocate the CD-ROM only to the local logged-on user. However, Windows File Protection is controlled by the Winlogon process; when that policy is in in effect, Winlogon cannot use the CD-ROM and that prevents the System File Checker from completing successfully.

RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, disable the security policy temporarily:

NOTE: You must restart your computer for the change to take effect.
Click Start, and click Run. In the Open box, type mmc, and then click OK.
On the Console menu, click Add/Remove Snap-in.
On the Standalone tab, click Add, and then click Group Policy in the Available Standalone Snap-ins list.
You may receive a message that the Group Policy Object applies to the local computer, click Finish, click Close, and then click OK.
In the MMC snap-in, view the following entry:
Console Root\Local Computer Policy\Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies\Security Options

Double-click the Restrict CD-ROM access to locally logged-on user only policy, click Disabled under Local Policy, and then click OK.
On the Console menu, click Exit, and then restart the computer.

Hey Glenn,

I don't think those things will help him.  The tool is specifically asking for a SP2 disk - which, to me, indicates a system file has been updated with a patch and can't be located in the original cabs.

This could be interesting...
Well I just basically was dumping information because I can't seem to resolve this issue even with a SP1 installation, but hoped that it may help here.

You are right though. If a SP2 version file was installed this will be interesting.

Thank you all for all of your help.  You have given me some great ideas (and knowlage) for future problems.  The good news is that I fixed it, although it being a rather dumb solution.  For the hell of it I tried a few different versions of the CD instead of the one I installed the system with.  It seems that the retail version (not the Dell version) of Windows XP Pro (SP1, not SP1a) was ok and it finished the scan.

Thanks again for the help, I will award points to those who helped.

Regards,
John
