Backup Notification

Hi experts

I am running NTBACKUP.EXE on some server, and I can not find a way for the backup utility to shoot me an email message with the status of each backup job, such backup so and os has started and all those good suff.

I really don't like to use a third party solution like veritas, because I am trying to save the company some money.

Is there any way like script or whatever that would do it with NTBACKUP?

Thank you in advanced, and I will appreciate any help from any expert.

never had to do this, but you could configure an action to email you the backup report that is generated with each backup... it is located in the ntbackup/data folder and is usually named backup01.log...  Now the problem with this is that the name will change, unless you delete it after reviewing it...

bit of a long shot this one, but you could try this:

Write an RFC822 email header and save it as a text file
Write the footer and save that

use a batch file copy command to concatenate the header, backup report and footer and copy the result into the drop directory of an IIS SMTP server - whoch with a little (ok a LOT!) luck will decide its a great idea to email it to you.

Frankly a very long shot indeed, but I have had a lot of caffiene this morning and i'm thinking a bit laterally!

As an alternative, if your comany sells IT stuff that you could become a veritas partner - they supply free versions to partners for internal use only.

Free Tool: Subnet Calculator

The subnet calculator helps you design networks by taking an IP address and network mask and returning information such as network, broadcast address, and host range.

Hmmm..   Never would have considered the partner program...  Now that is a great idea.!!  And thanks for elaborating on the email theory..  I just did not know how it could actually be done..  let me get into my second or third cup of java and maybe I can think like that..!!

You'd be amazed who will give out free software to "partners", sometimes free and sometimes for a small payment.

Microsoft does the MAPS programs which gets you £5k+ of software for a subscription of only £200
Well worth it

Yes, I knew about MS's program, and you are right on target on price, as it goes here in the US for $295.  Most of my home network runs off of their software..  :)  But I had never of thought of suggesting it as an answer here..  A great idea...
