Error when starting Exception MSXML could not CoCreateInstance HRESULT=80040154 thrown with error code -2147221164

When attempting to start Quickbooks 2004 on my Windows XP Pro laptop I get the following error:

An unrecoverable error has occurred
Exception MSXML could not CoCreateInstance HRESULT=80040154 thrown with error code -2147221164

Function:ADR::Repository::DoInitialLoad
File: .\.\src\Repository.cpp
Line:81

When I click OK on the error alert I get another popup with the following:
Microsoft Visual C++ Debug Library

Debug Error!
Program c:\Program Files\Intuit\Quickbooks Pro\qbw32.exe
abnormal program termination
(Press Retry to debug the application)

When I hit retry I get another popup that wants to send MS an error report with the following:

Error signature

AppName: qbw32.exe   AppVer:13.0.4001.1056   MmodName: sckchui.dll
ModVer: 1.0.1038.0 Offset:00030a63

I reinstalled Quickbooks but to no avail. I still get the same error.

Suggestions?

Dave

While this did solve my problem the boot time on the laptop has now increased dramatically for some reason.

Thanks for the assistance ...... Dave Watkins

I am having the exact same problem, but the solution here did not work for me.  I installed msxml.msi (MSXML 4.0 Service Pack 2).  I still get the same error.  Any other suggestions?

Thanks.

Hi -

I found this question since I was having the same problem with Quickbooks.  After two days of trying solutions (including the one above) with no success, I managed to find this on the Microsoft support site and it worked.

Go the the Start menu

Select Run

Type (or paste) the following into the Open box:

%windir%\system32\regsvr32.exe %windir%\system32\MSXML3.dll

It solved the problem for me.

Hoping you're successful>

I am getting a similar error for Qickbooks 2004 on our Win2K Citrix server.  I attempted Bob Jaffee's fix, and got the following error:

“MSXML3.dll” is not an executable file and no registration helper is registered for this file type.

Any idea on what's going on, or how to resolve it?

Never mind - I ran Windows Update, and rebooted it, and the DLL registered properly this time.  We're up and running fine now.
