Outlook 2002 suddenly starting downloading email very slowly. I have cable modem

Microsoft Outlook 2002 is taking a very long time to download email. When I highlight a message, I think it is f rozen but after about 20 seconds it starts to respond. Until recently it had a quick response. What did I change in my system that may have caused this? I'd surely appreciate help.
