Apache .htacces login redirect problem

Here's the deal....

I'm using the latest apache web server in linux and I want users to be redirected to their home directory based on their login name using .htaccess.

eg.

http://mydomain.com/     [enters account user name and password]

and redirects to:

http://mydomain.com/~username/

I've seen some examples using the url to pass the login information (http://username:password@mydomain.com) but this does not work with all browsers

Does anyone know a solution to this problem??
