BizTalk is like a messaging system. Its used for enterprise application integration. If you have an old mainframe application in your organization, and now you're making a J2EE or a .NET based application, and suppose that you want to integrate all of them - such that the mainframe application can talk to the .NET application, and so on and so forth, then you need something to integrate them together. This is done by BizTalk. Its like a central hub or a middle-man. It deals with standard protocols like HTTP, FTP, etc and exchanges messages in standard formats like XML. So all applications (irrespective of technology) understand these protocols and messages.

Not sure if BizTalk will run on '98 but for XP its fine. On XP, you will not be able to use the BAM/ BAS services of BizTalk, but on Windows 2003, you can do it (because it is integrated with Share Point).

what is exactly biztalk. I looked at microsoft but didn't really understand it.
what i am needed is a software that takes data from my system and formats in a way then sends it to my outsource( transfer company) then they transfer it to the business that the data is going to.

I am pretty much new to this.
